June 2009

The departure of Doug: A good-looking legacy

doug barryWard Six looks a lot better now than when Doug Barry was first elected to the City Council almost six years ago. There are evergreen shrubs and bright flowers in new traffic circles. There is a fine-looking black metal fence along newly bricked medians on University Boulevard. There is a new park with plans for stone walls.

“If people notice me I want it to be for something good that I’ve done,” Doug once said, and that is as apt a description as any of his time as a local politician, which came to an end May 26 with his resignation.

Tired of the commute into the District, where Doug and his wife work and where their daughter attends school, the family left Takoma Park two days later for a new house in northwest Washington.

They will be back, however, for a 6:30 reception on June 22 in Doug’s honor in the lobby of the Community Center.
