TAKOMA PARK, MARYLAND • SILVER SPRING, MARYLAND

Features: Q— Photos and Inquiry by Julie Wiatt

What scares you and how do you cope with it?

Alicia Hall (with Sofia, far left): "There's so many things we need to protect our kids from -- the huge things like terrorism and Katrina, but also things like the food supply. My older child loves spinach and I could have fed her toxic spinach. And the Internet; it should be safe to let a 13-year-old go on the computer. As a parent you never have a moment that you don't have to be vigilant. So, I try to be vigilant all the time. I fill out warranties so we are get notices of recalls. I only let my children play with families I know. And I pray a lot. But it's exhausting.

June Collins (middle): "What scares me now is the American government. They are taking away more and more of the basic rights we think we have. We think we're free and we're not. I don't know how to cope with it. I vote. But I feel like I need to prepare because I don't know what they'll do next. They say everyone needs a "go pack". I believe our government is dangerous but it's hard to be prepared. You worry about not just yourself, but your family and friends. You have to do more than vote now. It's not enough."

Chriss Collins (above, far right): "The same thing that's always scared me -- change. People grow and change. I pray on it and remind myself that it's a part of life and we have to move forward with it. I try to remind myself that change is good. That we have to change or we die."

Tisha Tryens: "Blank college applications scare me. I try to ignore them, and then I plug in the easy information and I'll get back to the essays later."

Peter Aldrighetti: "What scares me is how much crime there is now, gangs, drug use, knowing it's not safe to walk home at a reasonable time like 7:30 or 8 o'clock."

Anthony Johnson: "What scares me is Freddy Kruger from Nightmare on Elm Street. Nothing much else scares me except for cars, because I got hit by a car. That's it, Freddy and cars. So I avoid what reminds me of Freddy, and I just cross at the light."

"Bruno" Hani Said: "That would be being buried alive. And one rule of thumb is I try not to think about it. But that doesn't stop me from watching CSI, especially the episode with Nick being buried alive."
