What do you think should be the role of the United Nations?

BY JULIE WIATT

Jared Albert: "The UN should leave America and Britain to set up the interim government in Iraq. Since they liberated Iraq they have the right to put up a new successful government. And other nations in the UN that were opposed to the war effort such as France, Germany and Russia, should have no say in the rebuilding and should receive no economic benefits from the installment of the new government.
Fik Tadesse: "I think the UN is American. If any problem comes in the world the UN could help. But there is no power in the UN. The only power is the US."
Sally Belanger (with Russell): "I guess my feeling is I want the US to work with the UN. I'm disappointed in Bush. I feel he's been less concerned with working with the UN. The way he discusses the issues puts everybody off, on the defensive. He doesn't seem to have the diplomatic skills other leaders have had."
Jadranka Gerrety (with Michael): "The UN should try to unite the nations, as their name says. [Sally and I] are friends, but we don't agree. I think Bush has tried. They went to the UN. If it doesn't work, what do you do?"
Barr Weissman (with Abby): I would say that given the state of the world, the role of the UN should be large. We need an international body to help make peace."
Patrice Simms: "It's a complicated question, not necessarily conducive to a simple answer. It seems the role of the UN ought to be to function as a forum for the international community to be able to collectively play a role in issues that impact the international community collectively. Certainly that would involve significant interactions between nation-states, such as war and nation-building, and restrictions of any type, such as possession of weapons of mass destruction."
Carol Evans: "It's called the United Nations, so it seems to me that they should be standing together trying to resolve problems in the world. With all these nations the decisions should be made to benefit everyone, like our Congress is supposed to work. One nation shouldn't take off on their own and do whatever they want. I'm talking generalities here, not naming any specific country. I want to be able to get on that plane [back to California]."

Arabella Grayson: "The UN should be a body for resolving world issues: hunger, peace, environmental issues, globalization. "

Nubia Rivera: "La ONU esta bien para los Estados Unidos y otras naciones. La ONU hace buen trabajo que ayuda al mundo. No es buena la guerra." [The UN is good for the US and other nations. The UN does good work that helps the world. War is not good.]
